Independent Contractors can be very helpful to small businesses, or any business. While it may seem easy to simply hire an independent contractor when you need additional help, the decision can be rocky. The State of Maryland and the federal government take a dim view of classifying workers as independent contractors when they should be classified as employees and the financial fallout of a mistaken classification of even a single worker can threaten your business. Proper due diligence and proper documentation can help you avoid many disastrous consequences.
