The City of Rockville is a NPDES MS4 Phase II community located in the Washington, DC metro area. The City has refocused its Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) program from traditional outfall dry weather flow investigations to target inspections of commercial facilities that have the potential to discharge pollutants into our storm drains and streams. The program is modeled after the Industrial Facility Stormwater Permit and is designed to educate facility owners to manage pollutants at their source.

What is the state of science, what are current best management practices, and where are the opportunities for improving recommendations?

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM | EPA Tools & Resources Webinar Tire Crumb Research In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR) and the EPA, in collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, launched a multi-agency research effort to address public concerns about exposures of athletes to tire crumb. The effort is known as the Federal Research Action Plan on Recycled Tire Crumb Used on Playing Fields and Playgrounds (FRAP). This webinar, co-presented by EPA and ATSDR, will focus on the Tire Crumb Exposure Characterization (Part 2), which completes the EPA/ATSDR work with respect to playing fields. The presentation will cover the various activities associated with this report, which were a pilot-scale exposure study including collection of field, personal, and biomarker samples for indicators of exposures; questionnaire and video-based activity assessments; exposure modeling assessments; and a supplemental biomonitoring study completed by ATSDR.

Join the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association, the St. Mary’s River Yacht Club, and Historic St. Mary’s City to clean up the shores of the St. Mary’s River! On April 28, 2024, at 1 pm, we will meet at the Historic St. Mary’s City visitor’s center and split up into teams. Teams will travel to Chancellor’s Point, Church Point, and along the shoreline picking up litter and other debris. We expect to be finished by 3 pm. Please bring sunscreen, water, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, and waders if you have them. We will provide gloves. If you are arriving by boat or launching a kayak, please meet us at the Dove Dock.

Novice volunteers and expert TreeKeepers alike are welcome to attend. Our tree planting projects are rain or shine, and we recommend closed-toed shoes and clothing that is appropriate for the weather and getting dirty. Hats, sunblock, and sunglasses are strongly encouraged. We ask volunteers to bring a reusable water bottle to reduce our waste.

The Boonsboro Green Fest committee is sponsoring a Swap & Recycling Event in Shafer Park in Boonsboro on Saturday, May 11 from 9am - 2pm.
Clothing (including shoes and accessories) for the Swap will be collected on Friday, May 10 beginning at 3pm at Pavilion 1. If possible, please separate and label bags: Boys, Girls, Mens, Womens, etc. to help with sorting.
Mark your calendars now and be ready to Swap & Recycle usable goods--including plants, household items, art & craft supplies, accessories, shoes, books, and more. There will also be areas set up to collect hard to recycle items such as scrap metal, electronics, bulky hard plastics, glass, wine corks, disposable razors, beauty product packaging, dental care items, egg cartons and lots more.
A full list of items to be recycled will be posted closer to the event date as this changes slightly from year to year. Please note that we will not be collecting appliances containing Freon/refrigerants or household trash.
This event is open to the public and not limited to the residents of Boonsboro. If you are able to volunteer at the event or help with set-up and/or clean-up, please reach out to the committee at info@boonsborogreenfest.com.
