8:00 AM - 11:00 AM 11th Annual Shred Day
Better Business Bureau serving Greater Maryland, which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year, will provide free document shredding during its 11th annual Shred Day on Saturday, April 28. A total of ten mobile trucks will be shredding on-site at the Maryland State Fairgrounds and IKEA Baltimore, with surprise guest appearances at both locations. Shredding is provided by Iron Mountain and runs from 8am to 11 am or until the trucks are full.

Open to the public and business community, BBB Shred Day encourages participants to bring up to three kitchen-size bags or file boxes of documents for secure, on-site destruction. This event is free of charge; however, since it is BBB Maryland Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, donations are appreciated.

This day is vital for raising awareness about identity theft in the area. Maryland is the 4th highest state for identity theft incidents and last year, 7,788 Marylanders reported they had been victimized, according to the Consumer Sentinel Network’s Data Book 2017. Even worse, total losses due to fraud, including, but not limited to, identity theft, were in excess of $12.4 million.

“BBB is determined to reduce the risk of identity theft in Maryland,” said Angie Barnett, CEO and President of BBB serving Greater Maryland. “By taking steps like this, we will continue to help our community fight back. In 2017, we helped 1,860 attendees destroy 44.7 tons of personally identifiable documents. We will do so again. Join us April 28.”

These efforts are important not only for helping individuals destroy personal documents, but also for supporting tree conservation. In fact, although the Sierra Club estimates that it takes 8-10 trees to produce one ton of paper, recycling Shred Day paper has saved as many as 800 trees over the last two years.

Shred Day is an all-outdoor event and takes place rain or shine. Attendees receive identity theft prevention tips and sponsor giveaways. Drivers and passengers are invited to watch the destruction of their documents, but are encouraged to stay in their vehicles while BBB staff and volunteers assist. Iron Mountain will provide compliant, environmentally friendly, on-site destruction at the event. The company is AAA certified by the National Association for Information Destruction and 100 percent of the collected paper is recycled.

BBB Shred Day is sponsored by Affordable Basement Waterproofing Inc., Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, Chesapeake Employers' Insurance Company, EZShield, GTL Remodeling, Horizon Services, Iron Mountain, MD Waterproofing & Radon Reduction, Strategic Factory, Tar Heel Construction Group, and WBALTV.

The BBB Maryland Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to help entrepreneurs build and sustain ethical businesses and empower consumers and donors to buy and give with confidence.  It is funded through donations and receives no state or federal money.
