| 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | The Connection Between Menhaden and Osprey, virtual
Osprey and menhaden are two iconic species of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and their populations are intertwined. Osprey rely on menhaden as a primary food source, and some experts contend that lower menhaden populations have had a direct impact on the success of nesting osprey pairs– whose reproductive rates are now at levels lower than during the height of DDT use.
Join us on Wednesday, October 15th from 12-1pm to hear from leading experts who will explore the current population trends of both osprey and menhaden, the ecological connection between them, and what’s being done to support their recovery.
| 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM | PFAS Destruction by a Hazardous Waste Incinerator - webinar The complete destruction of PFAS is important to help protect human health and the environment. Technologies that can destroy PFAS are needed to treat stockpiles of materials with high concentrations of PFAS, such as aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) and other contaminated environmental matrices. PFAS properties make them difficult to destroy, and other fluorinated compounds and PFAS may be formed as byproducts (known as products of incomplete destruction or PIDs) if conditions are not adequate for their destruction. It is important to evaluate the efficacies of various technologies for the destruction of PFAS. This presentation will describe the development of Appendix A of EPA’s 2024 Interim Guidance on the Destruction and Disposal of PFAS and Materials Containing PFAS and its use to evaluate thermal treatment technologies, including results of an evaluation of a full-scale hazardous waste incinerator to evaluate air emissions and the effectiveness of incineration. Results show promise for both incineration and the ability to conduct a comprehensive characterization of an incinerator. | |

| 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | Everglades of the North: Protecting the Nanticoke River Watershed Webinar
The Nanticoke River, which runs from central Delaware through the Eastern Shore of Maryland and into the Chesapeake Bay, is considered one of the most pristine rivers in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Its watershed encompasses approximately 725,000 acres, including more than 50,000 acres of tidal wetlands, and provides critical wildlife habitat for migratory waterfowl, 180 state or globally rare plant species and more than 70 animal species that are considered rare or uncommon. Often called the “Everglades of the North,” the Nanticoke watershed is threatened by the encroachment of development, sea level rise, habitat degradation and fragmentation.
To conserve the Nanticoke and its resources, Chesapeake Conservancy helped convene a team of seemingly unlikely partners who share a common mission of conserving open space and creating a corridor of protected land in the Nanticoke watershed. Join our upcoming webinar to learn about the history of the Nanticoke and how we are conserving lands on the Eastern Shore with our partners.

| 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM | Squaring the Circular Economy: How to Make Reducing Waste Easy for All, virtual
The circular economy should be simple, and it needs to be simple if we are to transition away from the linear economy globally. We must reduce the amount of virgin resources that are used in our economy. But making this shift can often feel confusing and complicated for manufacturers, businesses, communities and consumers.
This panel will explore examples of good circularity, where systems are circular and working well, often without broad consumer appreciation of the circularity on offer, and consider the real barriers to more products and material streams from going circular. How can governments help us all to move beyond the jargon by making the best choices the easiest choices, and just how do the public (consumers) feel about circular solutions, are they engaging, do they believe, and are they seeking opportunities to participate – or not?
This webinar will be recorded and available to watch on-demand.
