5:30 PM - 7:00 PM State of the Rivers: Sassafras & Bayside Creeks

Save the date for our highly anticipated State of the Rivers events — a series of free presentations held each spring to inform the public about the current state of our Eastern Shore waterways.

Each year, between April—October, ShoreRivers’ professional Riverkeepers conduct weekly tidal sampling of sites from Cecilton to Cambridge, then test for multiple scientific water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, nutrient pollution, algae, and clarity. These indicators reveal the overall health of our waterways and our progress toward protecting and restoring our local rivers. ShoreRivers, statewide groups, and national agencies use this information to track trends, develop remediation strategies, advocate for stronger laws and enforcement, alert the public of potential health risks, and inform region-wide efforts toward clean water goals.

The public is invited to learn more about the results of this testing, with a focus on the Sassafras River and the Bayside Creeks at this State of the Rivers presentation, hosted by Sassafras Riverkeeper Zack Kelleher. Light refreshments, including local oysters, will be served.

Doors open at 5:30pm for a reception of wine, beer, and light appetizers. The formal presentations will begin at 6pm. This event is free — registration is requested but not required!

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Joint EPA Tools & Resources and Emergency Response Research Webinar Waste and Materials Management D
A significant component of responding to and recovering from large-scale or isolated events is the management of wastes and materials resulting from the incident itself or from activities cleaning up after the incident. The quantification, segregation, transportation, staging, storage, and disposal of waste can be an arduous and costly undertaking that is difficult to manage. Waste must be holistically considered with decisions being made regarding remediation throughout the response and recovery timeline. To facilitate planning and the proper management of disaster wastes and materials, EPA developed several waste planning and management tools for chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear incidents and natural disasters. This suite of tools can assist decision makers with waste management decisions in the pre-planning, mitigation, response, and recovery phases of an incident. This webinar will provide an overview of several EPA tools currently available to support decision making and planning for waste management following a large-scale event.
