| 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | Pavement and Paddleboards: Swimmable Urban Waterways - virtual Urban areas are gathering places, making them vibrant centers of culture and innovation. However, gathering so many people in one place also leads to challenges with impervious surfaces, waste, and toxic contaminants. Recreation on our urban waterways has not been historically feasible. Today, many groups are working towards making the fishable and swimmable waterways described in the Clean Water Act a reality. Their successes and the challenges that they face hold important lessons in environmental restoration that we can all learn from. | |

| 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM | Elevated Temperature Landfills: Case Studies, Indicators, and Knowledge Gaps - webinar The generation of heat in a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is normal as microorganisms break down waste. Elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs) are MSW landfills that exhibit temperatures above regulatory thresholds (145° Fahrenheit) due to abnormal chemical reactions within the waste mass. These reactions can cause changes in landfill gas composition, noxious odors, rapid and severe waste settlement, leachate seeps and outbreaks, and generate strong leachate, all of which add to operator costs for facility management and can impact human health. For the previous two decades, EPA’s Office of Research and Development along with multiple regional and state agencies have been encountering a number of landfills that come to be known as ETLFs. This presentation will provide examples of different ETLFs and the different strategies used to manage or control the sub-surface reactions, the indicators or symptoms operators and regulators should be looking for, and identify some key questions that remain unanswered. | |
