12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Virtual: THERMAL EVALUATION OF UPLAND STORMWATER BMPS: IMPACT OF DESIGN MODIFICATIONS TO BUFFER STRE
Thermal pollution from urbanization and ponding of water in stormwater management facilities is a known detriment to the biological functionality of streams. Section 502(6) of the Clean Water Act considers heat as a pollutant, and temperature continues to be a focus of the category 5 listings within MDE’s integrated report. Currently, typical stormwater retrofit designs address nutrient and sediment inputs, but do not necessarily include design elements that address thermal impacts, which likely increase stream temperatures during warmer months. Carroll County consists primarily of Use III and IV streams, and to generate a better understanding of what capacity specific BMPs have on reducing thermal impacts to the receiving waters, studies were initiated that looked at the efficacy of these practices at reducing thermal impacts to our waterways. Long-term monitoring was set up at a large sand filter BMP to understand how dry facilities buffered stormwater temperatures from pavement to tailwater. Additionally, an ongoing paired BMP study is comparing a traditional bottom release wet pond with one that incorporated a “gravel lens” around the dewatering pipe. Ideally, the “gravel lens” will provide better temperature buffering, reducing the thermal impact to receiving waterways than that of traditional bottom release wet ponds.

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Regenerative agriculture and other fixes to the food system - webinar
Industrial agriculture has brought us huge monocultures of corn and soybeans. Yearly tillage has robbed the soil of organic matter, and little habitat remains to support the natural enemies of crop pests.  These impacts now require the heavy use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides to maintain yields, resulting in significant greenhouse gas emissions and massive air & water pollution.  How can we change agriculture to maintain soil health and rebuild the biodiversity that can help control pests while reducing carbon emissions, controlling pollution and maybe even sequestering some carbon?

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Watching Out for Winter Road Salt - Virtual
Discover how this yearly practice affects our waterways. The Chesapeake Bay watershed receives an estimated 2.5 million tons of road salt each year! While it is used to deice roads to ensure safe travels, it can have negative impacts on the environment. One of the most concerning is how it changes the salinity of our beloved Bay.

Road salt can increase the salinity of freshwater habitats that lead to the Chesapeake Bay, making them less suitable for migratory fish to spawn. It can also impact the development of fish, causing some species to be smaller and weigh less.

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Progress in the energy transition and our liberation from fossil fuel use - webinar
Major transitions between technologies, like gas to electric lights, may seem quick when we look back on them.  But transitions generally take decades.  During this time, progress is inevitably punctuated by setbacks as the proponents of the status quo fight the prospect of change.  This bumpy path is clear in our current transition from dirty fossil fuel-based power to clean renewable power from wind and solar.  As disinformation and political lobbying by fossil fuel interests accelerate, the giddy jubilation of 2022 has given way to discouragement. But take heart – data show that fossil fuel use has already peaked in some countries.  The demise of fossil fuels is now inevitable!
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Rewilding: Regenerating communities and ecosystems - webinar

The removal of large predators and herbivores in the US and Europe has reduced the complexity and stability of natural food webs.  This has changed and impoverished ecosystems to the point of near-collapse.  Reintroducing predators and/or large herbivores to “rewild” ecosystems has produced some exciting results.  Rewilding is not about restoring past communities and ecosystems.  Instead, it aims to establish new food webs that can become as stable and biodiverse as native ones.
